What's happened to Jules these days anyway, when you need him.;)
You are 'under the gun' (first position after the big blind), Your cards are Ace Queen suited. The blinds started at 100, 200. They are now 500, 1000. The game began with 10000 chips and you have 20000. You limped initially with 2 others after you but the small blind raised to 3000 and the big blind flat called. Both players are tough/aggresive. What do you put them on and what do you do. Your opinions please.... |

at 6:35 AM, Saturday July 4, 2009 EDT Johnjo, are in in the money yet? What are the chip stacks of your opponents? Have you been at their table long, how have they been playing?

You have just made the final table of 10, you are not in the money yet and you have never played with these guys before. Both the SB and the BB are far from conservative, the small blind is fairly aggresive entering 1 in 3 to 1 in 5 of pots. The BB is currently playing tight but has been as aggressive as the SB in the earlier stages. Hopefully that should be enough to go on. |

at 6:00 PM, Monday July 6, 2009 EDT Thought I'd draw a few more players as most were tight and folding on bigger raises. (but it was a major mistake for me to limp as I was in a miserable position and didn't get any info back... what was I thinking limping with AQ under the gun...doh). Anyway I know what I should have done afterwards, the question I guess is what should you ordinarily do to try and salvage the hand.
Info.. The other 2 limpers are fairly conservative at at this stage a large raise would fold them out. Next blind level is 600 1200, the blinds will be up in about 5 hands and no antes in this game Only 4 get the to the money top prize 150 quid about 200+ dollars. The SB and BB are about 40000 chips, the chip lead is about 100000 and 9 players left. |

at 11:17 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009 EDT Johnjo, you have an M of 13, in a few more hands you'll be down to an M of 10 or less.
At the moment it looks unlikely that you'll make the money. In my opinion it is time to open up the window of risk. Avoid confrontation with the big stack and any micro stacks. Focus on confronting mid stacks that are conservatively trying to make the bubble without undue risk. Stealing and re-stealing blinds is vital to your survival. In this situation I am never limping and in most spots it's a simple shove or fold, with the exception of a 3-bet blind steal if the timing feels right. That's my two penneth anyhow. BTW, how did that particular hand and the rest of the tourney work out? Was it an 18 seater SnG? |

at 12:24 PM, Wednesday July 8, 2009 EDT Thanks Jules....
I'm starting to realise AK AQ AJ are ok hands if you are the raiser in a decent position but hardly ever when you are on the end of one. Always seem to be up against a big pair and feel a bit shitty if you hit as they. are usually ahead. The only way I could have escaped this hand was a raise preflop which would have folded the small blind and drawn out the BB or just flat calling the SB raise as I again would have folded butr after the flop. The SB was on J10 off the BB was JJ. If I was lucky the BB would have reraised and I might have folded. Instead what happened was I made an X3 reraise which subsequentially got called by both. The SB had called out of pure stubborn machismo. The flop came 10,3,3. The SB moved all in. The SB got called by the BB and believe it or not me (was thinking hmm 2 over cards- Tilt) and the rest is history. |
