12:20 THEREFORE if thine enemy hunger, feed him ;if he thirst, give him drink:for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 12:21 BE not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. |

at 11:23 AM, Wednesday August 6, 2008 EDT No problem. One of the challenges (and joys) of the internet is accepting that not everyone has the same set of belief, culture, values, standards as one's self. Also, people are not the same as they are on the net as they are in real life. I find it best to just imagine that everyone is a fictional character. You shouldn't get any more offended by what people say on the net than you would if Bugs Bunny told you off.
The other challenge of the net is that hypocrisy (or any impression of hypocrisy) is magnified many many times. Conversely, sincerity, is mini-fied. And, to my dismay, sarcasm is often missed altogether. You're fundamentally a good guy, Jack. Impatient is too but of a different nature. Impatient cracks me up, I enjoy his/her style. But then my partially suppressed inner-self is a jerk. What can I say. I'm not particularly religious. I suppose it's safe to say I de-converted. I don't know if you're apparent conversion is a recent thing or not. However, it's generally true that recent converts tend to go online and try to convert others with their new found 'truths'. Because this is a common pattern on the net, it tends to come across as offensive, belittling, or inconsiderate to just about everyone who is not already of the same belief. There's just about no way to avoid sounding as if you are placing other people beliefs and/or personal space on a lower level than your own. In my opinion, the web is too shallow a medium for evangelism. I think if one feels compelled to evangelize, they could do well by first contemplating the line quoted from the Tao "There are few in the world who attain to the teaching without words..." Or, perhaps reflecting long on this "Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly. And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly." Point being, it's better to be rather than demand others be. If one's state of be-ing is the way, then it is suggested that others will be more inclined to follow. 2 cents worth of advice from a fictional character on the web... |
