Gpokr I'm proud to say is one of the few places where people from all over the world can share their ideas in the forum and over a poker table. I don't always agree with the opinions stated but I like hearing a little of how the world views my country as a whole. all I can say is keep it coming. I prefer being an enlightened american rather than an ignorant one... Rob S.

at 10:07 AM, Friday September 19, 2008 EDT CountryGirl, I too would urge you to look further than Fox, CNN etc. Don't even trust BBC. If you think our views are all the product of YouTube then please wise up and think again. Ever watched Al Jazerra? Ever read a book or sought an independent view on the goings on in Iraq and Afghanistan? You should try it some time. And if you're not willing to you should be totally honest with yourself and ask the question "why won't I do this?". Any opinion, idea, view or belief is not worth a fig if you're not prepared to challenge it to see if it will bear scrutiny. The human mind becomes dead and useless when we fail to challenge our ideas. There is only one reason why some people hide away from information that may change their entrenched beliefs, FEAR, which is far from healthy and insults the very essence of the self.
Clearly you didn't watch the YouTube clip I posted because if you had you would not have commented in such a way. Go on give your mind a chance and take a look. You'll see a very PUBLIC press conference taking place and not the rantings of a loner on a webcam. Incidentally, where do you source the information that validates and reinforces your views? |

at 12:36 PM, Friday September 19, 2008 EDT CG Obama did not say raising taxes is patriotic. Joe Biden said it. Big bad for not having your facts right.
And my 2 cents on his statement. Taking care of the sick and elderly is patriotic. Educating children to ensure a bright future is patriotic. Being good stewards of our beautiful landscape is patriotic. But guess what. It's not free to do these things. All Americans got a "stimulation" check a few months back. The intent was for us to go shop and stimulate the economy. Guess what...we borrowed the money and have to pay it back plus interest. My guess is that our children and grandchildren will have to pay too. I watched both conventions and am open to understanding the other side. But it doesn't make sense to me from an economic or ethical standpoint. In the end, it's not me or CG who will elect the next president. It will be the collective "us." I hope we choose wisely. |

at 9:52 PM, Friday September 19, 2008 EDT This post was not about the election or the candidates. I have a lot of love and respect for CG and I think highly of Impatient as well. But if you read the opening comment I am and will continue to be curious and open to the views of people outside the United States in regards to their opinions of current events. The events I am referring to affect not only the US but the world as a whole. My vote is for McCain if you really want to know, not because I think he has all the answers but because I think he represents the greatest chance the US has for a regain of some semblance of economic stability. Obama is well meaning and he is right that we need to care for the uninsured and elderly but if your wallet already nearly empty you don't write another check. Both candidates have advocated give aways but a universal health plan is simply not realistic in the middle of a recession/depression. Roosevelt in the Great Depression recognized that the solution to the failing economy was putting people to work. He created all kinds of programs to create jobs and spur the economy. He built dams and roads and created the CCC. His analysis was jobs create stability and when people have an income and they spend, then other jobs are created to support those needs. You can't create jobs if you have to take away more of the average person's income to support programs that don't generate more jobs, such is the nature of universal healthcare. When the economy is already weak from the collapse of one our largest sectors of growth you don't weaken it further by increasing taxes.
In one final thought. The world has become a very small place in modern times. We can no longer be complacent as a race in the status quo. Global warming, diminishing resources, and the every day trials of calmity and fate have sent a clear message that we need to start the process of unification now, not after our power is gone, our water is polluted, and the food supply is tainted or insufficient to supply our needs on this planet. |
