Why are the table Maximum the same as the new raised Minimum?
This just means the lottery players can go all in and not risk being raised |

at 7:19 AM, Monday November 17, 2008 EST The monthly game works more like a cash game than a tourney.
It is common knowledge in No Limit Hold'em that the amount put down on the table is typically around 200 x the Big Blind. i.e BB $50 - max buy in $10,000 min buy in $2,500 BB $200 - max buy in $40,000 min buy in $10,000 BB $1,000 - max buy in $200,000 min buy in $50,000 BB $5,000 - max buy in $1,000,000 min buy in $250,000 BB $25,000 - max buy in $5,000,000 min buy in $1,250,000 The latest change has just made things a lot worse not better. Ryan, please go and read a book about the basics of No Limit Hold'em or just go and watch some live cash at one of the partner sites you list. |

at 8:14 AM, Monday November 17, 2008 EST Since it was my idea originally I guess it's up to me to come here to defend it. :)
First I want to say that the stats will get severely borked, especially since the change came in the middle of the month. Everyone has hundreds of thousands of chips already, much more than they would win in the current system with the same skill and luck. This means that this month will be quite weird when it comes to playing and choosing the right table to play at. Next month will be much more different though. The blinds will have much greater importance which will punish playing with average hands and, in the end, decrease the chance of getting rivered. Now, let's look at some of the objections: Problem - Game rewards all inners. Answer - Only during the rest of this month. Since the max buy in is decreased, the amount of chips you can win in a set time will decrease and thus the "value" of play money will increase. But because the first half of this month used the old system it means you have "more chips than you should". That's why there's more all inners than earlier. However once the chips get cleared the number of all inners will dramatically decrease, especially on the higher tables. Problem - New system rewards chasers. Answer - See previous answer. Pumping up the blinds/max buy in ratio virtually means higher blinds, higher minimal bets and ultimately worse pot odds for chasers. |

at 9:02 AM, Monday November 17, 2008 EST I agree with the others, this is a poor change, stack size is an important part of poker, especially in No Limit. We have tournaments for tournament play now.

at 9:09 AM, Monday November 17, 2008 EST @Jules: I know what you mean. This is not a cash game however and therefore we should not take the cash game approach imho. If we do, we get lots of people play with average hands which is what happened till now. So either we let it be or do something that would differ gpokr from cash games. A technical change if you will. But this technical change will bring the play style closer to what it looks like on cash games.

at 9:55 AM, Monday November 17, 2008 EST Ryan--this is not fair...change it back now. I know you can do it. It's mid month and really screws things up.
Repeat: Do it now. I know you can. |
