"AWAY" players at tourneys

I started playing the tourneys recently and noticed that “away” players still get cards unlike in the regular games. I’ve even lost money to aways. I think that players that are away at the start of a hand should not get cards. Last night was worse. A player got up early and then went away and waited for players to go in and then jumped back in when he had a good hand and then raised. They did this at least twice. On one hand I went in only because this player, downwind from me, was away and I thought I only had to play one other player for the pot and then they jumped in and raised at the last second. They had a pair and won the pot. I would have folded if they weren’t away. This tactic may not be technically illegal but to me is cheating and chickenshit. This player went on to win the tourney.

I think they should change the rules so that if you are “away” you simply don’t get dealt any cards, period.

Until this is changed watch out for rayadidas5 when you play in the tourneys.

If they are not out then julesdogs suggestion is the next best thing. Nothing worse than an away player winning a hand even when the antis have been raised. ?????????? What is that anyway?

I agree with Jules, something definatly needs to be done.

Jules, thats the way it works now. If you raise an away player they will be auto-folded. The exception comes when they are all-in. So this begs the question: if you're away and put all-in should you be auto folded? If yes, its sort of against the way holdem works - it may cause other issues.

I know away players are annoying. Other than that I think they're fairly harmless. It's annoying to see an away player last longer than us. But its should be very rare that an away player will play until the final table.

I'd like to throw out a suggestion that I'm more comfortable with: If you're away for more than 5 hands in a row you pay big blind every hand. This will cause real away players to go out much quicker. Thoughts?

Sounds like fair plan Ryan, if it lessens the chances of them reaching the final table i'm all for it!

i agree w jus dont deal cards if away. I hate coming bak to table to see that i had been dealt AA the hand b4 i came bak after a restroom break. Someone else may have been able to be dealt the A's i couldn't play, i'm guessing.

Ryan, thank you for making the changes. You are quite right. If an away player is put all in due to the blinds their cards should remain live and not be auto-folded. Other than being all in their cards should be auto-folded when they fail to act to a bet or a raise.

Some players may find this annoying but that's the way real holdem tournaments are played and I see no valid reason to deviate from standard holdem rules.

Well thats not the way it works on pokerstars, you are folded when all in, in the blinds. But hey what do they know its only one of the biggest online poker sites.

The away has always folded when raised so basically nothing has changed. Surely hold-em is actually about playing the cards you are dealt if you are away, you are not playing the game. Therefore why should you win?

Womble, on 'full tilt' aways are auto-folded unless all in on the blinds.

Still, if live players cannot beat an away player then what hope do they have?

Well different rules are used then (unless i haven't been watching properly). Also when the away is put all in, its all about luck anyway.
